Vibes From the Avenue: A Meditation on Phil Ranelin
-86.183463, 39.78513The Indiana Avenue neighborhood was home to dozens of nightclubs and music halls, the Pink Poodle is among the neighborhood’s most legendary venues. “Vibes From the Avenue: A Meditation on Phil Ranelin” celebrates the Indianapolis trombonist Phil Ranelin and his connection to Indiana Avenue, particularly the Pink Poodle nightclub. The club flourished in the early 1960s and was renowned for its eclectic mix of burlesque dancers, comedians, jazz musicians, and R&B vocalists, including Aretha Franklin, Max Roach, Lottie the Body, Redd Foxx and Etta James. Ranelin, a co-founder of the revered Detroit-based jazz collective Tribe, first met his Tribe bandmates Wendell Harrison and Marcus Belgrave at the Pink Poodle. In 1965, Ranelin also met his hero John Coltrane at the club, at that time the venue was known as Chateau de Count and Eve. “Vibes From the Avenue: A Meditation on Phil Ranelin” was composed and co-produced by trombonist Ernest Stuart and incorporates stylistic references to Ranelin’s 1976 recording “Vibes from the Tribe”. Kyle Long provided additional production elements, including excerpts from his interviews with Ranelin, along with field recordings taken from Ranelin’s childhood home in Martindale-Brightwood and the former site of the Pink Poodle.
