Carbon & Oxygen was written and recorded live by Jordan Munson at the opening of the 100 Acres Art and Nature Park on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art on June 19, 2010. This work responds primarily to the site of the visitor’s pavilion as a tribute to the work of architect Marlon Blackwell—an angular structure that celebrates to the beauty of the environment in which it is located adjacent to the White River. Like the structure of the pavilion, Carbon & Oxygen is layered with sharp electronic edges that complimentary ethereal sounds from the environment at this site. Using data and computation in his electronic track, Munson integrates the sounds of crackling wood, running water, sweeping wind, and tonal clusters. These are all layered to amplify the presence of the surrounding forest. The glacially slow pace of the composition is reminiscent of the growth of trees and the forming of natural landscapes in Indianapolis.
