In What is the City Hiding, Indianapolis-based artist Stuart Hyatt brings the partially invisible waterway to life by creating a track for the part of Pogue’s Run that runs under the city. The ominous opening to this track creates a heightened sense of awareness to the secrets that exist just underfoot in a city. Prior to settlement of Indianapolis, this waterway ran above ground and was critical waterway for Indigenous people. When Alexander Ralston designed the Mile Square layout of Indianapolis, Pogue’s Run was the only interruption to his grid plan for the city. From 1914 to 1915, to overcome this interruption to this city plan, the “Pogue’s Run Drain” (also called the “Pogue’s Run Improvement”) was completed and it submerged the stream beneath downtown Indianapolis from New York Street (on the east side) to the White River (on the west side) of the city.
